Basilica with monumental architecture, an important place of pilgrimage in Padua.

Padua has known how to reconcile spirit and religion. The city remains linked to Anthony of Padua, one of the most popular saints in Italy. The protector of children is called here "Il Santo". The huge basilica dedicated to him is a place of pilgrimage and, more broadly, a must-see for everyone. Its monumental architecture is deeply eclectic: a Romanesque façade, Byzantine domes, Gothic bells. Erected in the 13th century, it was intended to house the remains of Saint Anthony after his canonization. The deployment of merchants of bondieuseries in the streets around is a good testimony of this popular fervor. This fervor can be seen inside the basilica, especially in the baroque treasure chapel, where the faithful meditate intensely in front of the tomb of the saint. The saint is invoked when something precious is lost: from the smallest material object (umbrella, purse) to the purest gifts: health, love, friendship... A chapel at the back of the choir houses the tongue and lower jaw of Saint Anthony. You have to see it to believe it! In the nave, although the setting lends itself more to devotion than to contemplation, allow yourself time to admire the magnificent bronzes by Donatello adorning the high altar. Don't miss the Gattamelata, the largest sculpture of the artist, which is enthroned on the square of the basilica. Three cloisters, a small museum and a projection room also adjoin the basilica.
