UNIVERSITY ( PALAZZO BO )
University with an anatomical theater, the first auditorium of medical sciences in the world, in Padua.
The University of Padua has been a rendezvous with human intelligence since 1221. Founded by the Bolognese, it flourished when Padua came under the rule of Venice, benefiting from the extraordinary climate of freedom and religious tolerance that prevailed in the Serenissima. Students flocked to the city from all over Europe, from Sweden to Poland. The greatest geniuses of their time found here a place conducive to experimentation and thought: Copernicus, Dante, Galileo. We can still see the wooden pulpit on which the latter taught, but perhaps the most spectacular thing to see here is the Anatomical Theatre, the first medical science auditorium in the world, built in 1594. A challenge to obscurantism and the Inquisition. A space composed of concentric circles, devoid of natural light, the sessions taking place at night, for greater safety, this type of scientific experiment being frowned upon by the Church. This extraordinary device allowed medicine to advance until 1892! This impulse for knowledge in a spirit of freedom can still be found in the ancestral ritual that follows the graduation ceremonies in June, during which each student, wearing his laurel wreath, is entitled to a staging, between hazing and striptease, always in a good-natured atmosphere. The guided tour will take you through the various classes furnished with contemporary artworks, the "Anatomical Kitchen" and the Anatomical Theatre.
