TORRE DELL'OROLOGIO
Tower with an astronomical clock in Padua, a marvel of medieval clockwork.
A marvel of medieval clock-making, the tower was erected in the 14th century as a fortified gateway to the city; it was not until 1428 that the astronomical clock, still visible today, was added. It displays the ancient astronomical theory that the Earth is at the centre of the universe. Among the signs of the zodiac on the dial, that of the scales is missing. This is not an oversight, however, because the clock refers to the pre-Roman calendar in which the constellations of the scales and the scorpion are one and the same.
