STATUA DEL GATTAMELATA
Admire this very large equestrian statue dominating the eastern side of the square of the Basilica of Saint Anthony
This large equestrian statue dominates the eastern side of the square where the Basilica of St. Anthony sits. Made between 1443 and 1452, it symbolizes the condottiere (or mercenary) Gattamelata who served under the Venetian Republic. The Serenissima, in his memory, invited the Florentine sculptor Donatello to design a monumental work in the center of Padua. The latter responded to the request with enthusiasm and brilliance. From the top of its base, the horse appears to be in motion, reinforcing the image of its rider.
