CHIESA SAN PIETRO MARTIRE
Church hosting several paintings by famous artists and monumental canvases.
This church dedicated to St. Peter of Verona (1205-1252) is of an astonishing simplicity. The Renaissance portal is surmounted by a bay window whose stained glass is composed of small discs of glass characteristic of the island's production. Inside, the nave is wide and the ceiling is high. The large arches of the nave, underlined by plant interlacing, are crowned with round windows. Built in 1417, it was destroyed by fire and rebuilt in Renaissance style, before undergoing several transformations in the following centuries, not always the most successful. Look at the left wall of the nave, between two arches, you can see the figure of the master builder carrying his building in his hand!
The architectural ensemble gives a feeling of serenity... Look up to see the ingenious workmanship of the framework. Wooden beams support the walls of the building. Some vegetal motifs adorn the walls, but above all, the church hosts several paintings by famous artists: Giovanni Bellini, Tintoretto (who signs us a remarkable Baptism of Christ, with very soft colors) as well as Bartolomeo Latterini(The Wedding of Cana, The Multiplication of the Breads) and his monumental paintings distilled in the choir. Finally, don't miss the sacristy, whose woodwork is superb. We linger on the allegorical figures sculpted with extreme meticulousness by the Venetian Pierre Morando, whose only masterpiece it was.
