MUSEO DEL VETRO
Museum that preserves the largest collection of Venetian glass and explains the different ways of working this material.
Created in the second half of the 18th century in the ancient diocese of Murano, surrounded by pleasant gardens and a charming inner courtyard, the glass museum traces the history of glassmaking in Murano. The different ways of working with this material are explained and exhibited. The various rooms trace the evolution of glass from antiquity to the present day. There is also an archaeological section at the beginning of the tour.
The museum holds the largest collection of Venetian glass in the world, with 4,000 pieces dating from the 15th century to the present day. The oldest object (1437) is a wedding cup in blue glass, decorated by Angelo Barovier, which is simply marvelous. But there are also more recent pieces (1895), such as this curious glass with a spiral base. One is amazed by the finesse of the glasses and mirrors dating from the 17th and 18th centuries, by the charm of the Baroque ceilings, and by the immense table decoration representing a miniature Italian garden (1760), all in glass! Without doubt the masterpiece of the museum!
The museum has undergone a complete makeover and now houses avant-garde exhibition spaces, suitable for the works of young contemporary master glassmakers. Finally, you should know that a room is specifically dedicated to Venetian pearls, fashioned to become jewelry, an ancestral activity that Murano and a few local craftswomen continue to perpetuate with enthusiasm and a sense of sharing.
