PARK OF THE FORGES OF VARENNE
Parc des Forges de Varenne, to discover the most complete and best-preserved wood-fired ironworks in Europe.
In the bocage region of Orléans, there are many iron and steel remains. Located in the grounds of a community center, the Varenne wood-burning forges are a complete ironworks complex. Dating back to 1767, the site includes a blast furnace and three 9-metre-high chimneys, providing an overview of the transformation process: ore and charcoal reduction, smelting using powerful bellows, rolling and cutting. Note the foundry workshop near the river.
