Colmar may be a town, but its charm is such that it's easily included in the list of France's most beautiful villages. Colmar is undeniably linked to three distinctive features: its Alsatian architecture, its emblematic museum and La Lauch, the river that runs through it. On this first day, we're going all out!

Morning 1: Colmar's historic heart

Start the first day of your 3-day visit to Colmar by soaking up the authentic atmosphere of the city center. You're likely to pass many churches, houses and other must-see sights. However, you'll have plenty of time to come back later. For now, take your time to stroll around...

Your steps will lead you to the charming Tanneurs district, a must-see in Colmar in 3 days. With its narrow streets and half-timbered houses, it's a pleasant place to stroll.

Continue your exploration to the Place de l'Ancienne Douane. It, too, is surrounded by picturesque houses and bordered by the Muhlbach stream. In this very touristy square, you'll find numerous Alsatian restaurants, as well as a fountain sculpted by Bartholdi, the local celebrity we'll talk about in a moment. You'll also see the Koïfhus, Colmar's oldest public building, dating from the 15th century.

As you explore old Colmar, you'll discover its charm step by step, from the Place des 6 Montagnes Noires to Rue Saint-Jean, before coming upon the Hansi Museum. Situated in Hansi's village, this is the place to immerse yourself in the work of illustrator Jean-Jacques Waltz: superb watercolors depicting the history of Alsace. Not to be missed during your 3-day weekend in Colmar!

The fun activity to book: We recommend this guided Segway tour of Colmar: easy and fun, the Segway really is the best way to visit Colmar.

Gourmet activity to book: Another option is to discover Colmar, Alsace's wine capital, on this guided walking tour of the old town, including a tasting of Alsace wines.

Unusual activity to book: Colmar isn't just Little Venice! There are plenty of secret places to visit before you leave. To find out more, go here to book your unusual guided tour of Colmar.

Afternoon 1: Unterlinden Museum and boat trip

After enjoying a delicious sauerkraut or baeckeofe in a local restaurant, treat yourself to a relaxing visit to the museum. But not just any museum! It's the musée Unterlindenlocated in a former 13th-century convent, a must-see in Alsace. Here you can admire a rich collection of medieval paintings and sculptures, some dating back to the Renaissance. The world-famous centerpiece is the Issenheim Altarpiece, with its astonishing feature: the panels are painted on both sides!

After your visit to the museum, continue your first afternoon in Colmar in an even gentler fashion. Embark on a boat trip through "La Petite Venise", one of Colmar's most emblematic districts. Lined with half-timbered houses, this area is indeed reminiscent of Italian Venice (on a smaller scale, granted, but with as much, if not more, charm!). A flat-bottomed boat, similar to those used in the Middle Ages, takes you on a peaceful discovery of the canals. A boatman-guide will tell you the history of the places you pass through, giving you another view of the city.

Day 2: Local market, toy museum and Auguste Bartholdi

If you didn't play the marmot in bed this morning, you'll still have plenty of time to visit the Musée du Jouet, just 1 km from the market. This museum will delight young and old alike, with over 1,000 toys on display, ranging from toy trains and plush toys to scale models and animated toys.
