THE DOMINICANS - HERITAGE LIBRARY
The Dominicans, majestic buildings used to house a gendarmerie barracks in 1795.
Built around 1300, the Dominican monastery buildings have enjoyed varying fortunes over the centuries. They were used to house a gendarmerie barracks in 1795 before being converted into a national library in 1803 and then into a municipal library in 1951. A major element of the Dominicans, the cloister is made up of arcades without a network which are articulated around a regular rectangle. One can admire murals dating from the end of the 15th century which illustrate the biblical cycle of the Passion. Dedicated to contemplative walks in a richly vegetated setting, this cloister regularly hosts chamber music concerts. Today, the Jacques Chirac Dominican - Bibliothèque Patrimoniale is a museum, an exhibition room, a library, a place of conservation and restoration in a unique bookbinding workshop. This majestic structure aims to retrace "a history of the book and the image" by relying on its incredible collections. With more than 200,000 books remarkable for their beauty, the Bibliothèque Patrimoniale brings together 1,217 manuscripts (most of which date back to the Middle Ages), 2,300 incunabula, as well as a collection of Alsatian alabics that constitute an exceptional testimony to the history of the region. In addition, there are important graphic collections (engravings, lithographs, prints, posters, photographs, etc.) and superb numismatic collections.
