TOIRANO CAVE
Spectacular caves, inhabited since the Paleolithic in Toirano
Inhabited since the Palaeolithic era, these caves inside the mountain (around fifty of them) are truly spectacular and among the most important in Italy. The kilometre-and-a-half-long route takes you along fantastic meanders with curious names: the Couloir en 8, the Couloir des empreintes (bear footprints, where numerous bones and even claw marks have been found on the walls!), the Antre de Cybèle and the Grotte de sainte Lucie à la source miraculeuse, whose corridor joins a 16th-century sanctuary dedicated to Saint Lucy. The most beautiful of the grottoes is the "Witch's Grotto", where stalactites and stalagmites are interspersed with human footprints. In the Laghetto room, a limpid expanse of water is inhabited by a colony of completely transparent crustaceans, a phenomenon explained by the total absence of light. Be sure to bundle up for the visit, as the inside temperature is only 16°C! The same ticket also gives access to the Ethnographic Museum in the center of the small village of Toirano, where you can see tools and furniture from the peasant life of yesteryear, mainly linked to olive growing. The objects are as curious as they are moving, most of them donated by the local population: a real journey into the past, as you discover the bedrooms and dining rooms of the notables of the time, as well as a shoemaker's store and the olive presses used by the region's farmers. A wonderful visit!
