CASTELLO SCALIGERO
Beautiful and imposing fortress with a museum presenting the traditional activities of Torri and the villages of the lake.
Beautiful and imposing fortress which dominates the habitat at the southern entrance of the village. The castle dates back to the 14th century but was built on the foundations of a previous building from the 10th century. Designed by Antonio della Scala, it was supposed to protect against the attacks of the Visconti of Milan. It fell into the hands of the Venetians in the 15th century, who added a beautiful orangery (1760), a large and long greenhouse visible on the south side of the castle and still in use today. Restored in the 1980s, the castle houses the Museo delle Tradizioni Locali, a museum that presents the traditional activities of Torri and the villages of the lake: fishing, the cultivation of lemons and olives, the construction of boats. Particular attention is paid to freshwater fishing, the main economic activity of the area along with olive cultivation, with the exhibition of a collection of old fishing nets, as well as the illustration of the models of boats used. Another curiosity is the large olive press, whose stone parts date back to Roman times. Finally, there is a room dedicated to the rock engravings found in the Lake Garda area, a testimony to the local population in the Bronze Age. In one of the rooms, a beautiful model reproduces the historical center of the city as it was at the beginning of the 20th century, while two large 18th century maps illustrate the topography of the time. Finally, a small botanical garden houses all the main plant species of the region.
