FLAMINGO
Area where the fresh water of the Everglades meets the salt water of the Gulf, canoes and kayaks for rent or boat tours
Flamingo is an area where the fresh water of the Everglades coexists with the salt water of the Gulf. The thousands of mangrove leaves that decompose in the water are a food source for many species and contain a special form of life that crocodiles, raccoons and manatees depend on. Canoe and kayak rentals are available at Noble Hammock (5 km), Hells Bay (6 km), Nine Mile Pond (8 km), West Lake (13 km), and Bear Lake (19 km). The Nine Pond Trail and the Bay Tours are generally the most suggested routes. Information brochures and maps showing the various routes are available at the Visitors Center. Another option on the water is boat tours from the Marina. Longer trails are available for pedaling, some of which take you through areas of coastal meadows where the flora has been selected for its affinity with the salt. You'll see cacti, agaves and yuccas. The Christian Point and Snake Bight trails are each 6 km long, the Rowdy Bend trail is 8 km long, and the Coastal Prairie trail is 21 km long. Following some readers' letters, we advise you to come with your own mountain bike because the city bikes for rent on site are not adapted to the trails. It is also possible to spend the night at Flamingo Campground. The safari eco-tents (with a real bed!) will delight glamping lovers.
