This ancestral tradition with a folk procession takes place in Grammont near Ghent and dates back to the 14th century.
The Cracker Festival is an ancestral tradition that dates back to the 14th century. It recalls the siege of the village of Grammont, located in the region of Ghent near Oudenaarde, by Gautier IV of Enghien. During the Hundred Years' War, he was Marshal of Flanders under Louis II and crushed the rebellion in several towns and villages, including Grammont in 1381. He died shortly afterwards in an ambush during the siege of Ghent. During this celebration, a folkloric procession throws crackers (bread rolls) into the crowd and barrels are set on fire.
