FUERTE DE SAN FELIPE DE BACALAR
Fort to protect the population of Bacalar from the attack of pirates particularly attracted by the trade of wood from Campeche
The Intendant General of Yucatán, Antonio de Figueroa y Silva, ordered the construction of this fort to protect the population of Bacalar from the attack of pirates who were particularly attracted by the trade in wood from Campeche. Its construction lasted eight years and was completed in 1733. Inside, an interesting small museum traces the history of the region from pre-Hispanic times to the present day, including the story of the bravery of the insurgents during the Caste War in 1858.
