A true natural jewel with a thousand shades of blue, the Bacalar lagoon

The Bacalar lagoon, with its thousand shades of blue, is a real natural jewel that it would be unthinkable not to discover, especially since there are many ways to approach and enjoy it, whether you are a thrill-seeker, an avid observer or a sportsman...

You can choose to take a boat ride on its waters, which are sometimes calm, sometimes stormy. A two-hour trip usually includes a visit to some of its most enchanting sites: Cenote Negro, Cenote de Cocalitos, the Pirates' Channel and los rápidos, that part of the lagoon where the waters become turbulent and rare stone structures called stromatolites are formed. The walk can be extended to the Xul-Há lagoon with its turquoise water, a sort of extension of the Bacalar lagoon.

You can also discover these places in a more autonomous way, by going to the various balnearios that exist on the banks of the lagoon. For example, plan to spend half a day at the balneario of Xul-Há and then go to the one in Cocalitos. Since most of the establishments on the shores of the lagoon rent out catamarans, kayaks or paddleboats, it is possible to explore the Pirates' Channel or the rápidos on your own in a more environmentally friendly way. Just ask the locals for directions (the waters of the lagoon are shallow and safe). To get to the rapids easily, it is best to leave from the Botadero San Pastor camp.
