ZONA ARQUEOLÓGICA DE EDZNÁ
Location of which some elements are characteristic of the Puuc style and others later in Edzna.
One enters through the Patio de los embajadores, in homage to the funding of the restoration of the site in the 1980s. Then we arrive at the Plataforma de los Cuchillos, a reference to the flint knives found at this site, some of whose elements are characteristic of the Puuc style (stones cut and assembled with precision, monolithic columns) and others later. In the main plaza stands the imposing Nohochná, the great house, a building measuring 135 m by 31 m, oriented north-south, whose volume is more similar to the earlier style of the Petén. This building, which is thought to be used for administrative purposes, has a special acoustic feature: when you clap your hands on top of it, you can hear the amplification of the sound spread throughout the square. It is easy to imagine the leaders addressing the crowd gathered lower down in the square from here. The juego de pelota is also held here. Facing the Nohochná, the Gran Acrópolis is the most representative complex, showing a great influence of the Guatemalan Petén and a patio with no less than 12 Puuc style constructions. On its side, the bewitching mouldings of the Templo de los Mascarones and, behind it, the Pequeña Acrópolis, with its base from 200 BC and the oldest stelae and ceramics on the site. Not far from the entrance to the site, a path of a few hundred meters allows a nice walk to discover the Vieja Hechicera, a pyramid with rounded corners still partially buried under the vegetation.
