NOTRE-DAME-SUR-L'EAU CHURCH
Church built by Guillaume de Bellême in the early 11th century at Domfront-en-Poiraie
Built on the banks of La Varenne by Guillaume de Bellême around 1020, this Norman-style Romanesque church in the shape of a Latin cross has retained its appeal despite the ravages of history (sacking during the Hundred Years' War, demolition of part of the nave, aerial bombardment). Frequented by pilgrims on their way to Mont-Saint-Michel, it welcomed William the Conqueror. Set in a restored granite setting, it reveals its assets: portal, modillions, 12th-century frescoes, recumbent tomb.
