Closing the Crop Over, this carnival brings together more than 15,000 people in the streets of Bridgetown with costumes and music.
The Grand Kadooment is the crowning event of the Crop Over festivities, a celebration marking the end of the sugarcane harvest in Barbados. This event attracts over 15,000 people to the streets of Bridgetown for a spectacular parade. In 2024, the party began at the Bridgetown heliport, joining the Mighty Grynner Highway before arriving at Kensington Oval. It's a whirlwind of colorful costumes, masks and dancing to the sounds of soca and calypso, often lasting well into the night.
At 9 a.m., the parade of costumed groups andbands sets off through the streets of the capital. As the hours pass and the sun climbs higher, the atmosphere becomes increasingly festive and electric. Participants, dressed in costumes adorned with feathers, sequins and pearls, dance enthusiastically, creating a fiery atmosphere. The music resonates throughout the city, taking everyone in its wake. With a bit of luck, you might spot Rihanna among the spectators, or even in the parade, as already happened in 2015 and 2017. Want to take part? You'll have to be prepared! The various bands present their theme for the year at the beginning of May, and you can buy a costume online, picking it up a few days before the carnival where the band will give you your instructions. The Grand Kadooment is the event of the year and embodies the ultimate expression of joie de vivre and Bajan culture.
