INDEPENDENCE ARCH
Erected in 1987, this arch on the south shore of the Chamberlain Bridge is a tribute to the country's independence. It features a number of significant elements for Barbados. At the base of the arch, the Pledge of Allegiance; on the pillars, national symbols such as the trident, the flying fish, the national flower (Pride of Barbados) and the Pelican (symbolizing Pelican Island, an islet that served as a quarantine area and is now linked to the main island); and at the top of the arch, the Barbadian coat of arms and motto.
