You'll have more opportunity to see this monument from your car or bus than on foot, since it has been erected in the center of a traffic circle (since 1985), but it remains a strong symbol for Barbadians. This bronze by Barbadian-Guyanese artist Karl Broodhagen depicts a standing slave who has just broken his chains following emancipation. Barbadians immediately saw in it Bussa, the slave who led the greatest revolt against the planters in 1816, and a national hero.
