Barbados Museum
If you want to know everything there is to know about the island, head for the Barbados Museum. Housed in the Garrison's former military prison, this museum preserves and exhibits scientific, historical and cultural treasures. Start with the Harewood Gallery, dedicated to the geological history and flora and fauna of Barbados. It also educates visitors about environmental protection. The Jubilee Gallery, with its "In Search of BIM" exhibition, traces the island's human history from the arrival of the Amerindians to the 1940s. This is the biggest part of the museum, as the gallery covers a wide range of themes, including aboriginal societies, colonization, the plantation system, slavery and its abolition, the rise of independence movements and more.
Explore also the Military Gallery (the name speaks for itself), the Cunard Gallery dedicated to the arts of the 18th and 19th centuries, offering a vivid glimpse of Caribbean society at the time, and theAfrican Gallery, which highlights the links between Africa and the Caribbean. The Warmington Gallery, an unusual recreation of the interior of a plantation house, can be visited from the outside to protect its precious objects. The interactive Children's Gallery will delight the youngest visitors while introducing them to science. A very complete museum, if a little old-fashioned. On the other hand, its souvenir store is a marvel, offering a plethora of items to take home or give as gifts: postcards, Bajan comics, cookbooks, crafts, CDs and more.
