HISTORIC CENTRE OF BRIDGETOWN
Bridgetown's colonial-style historic center and surrounding streets, a UNESCO World Heritage Site
Bridgetown's historic center and garrison have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2011. This remarkable ensemble encompasses an old town built between the 17th and 19th centuries, including the synagogue quarter, as well as a military garrison and the ruins of former forts. This heritage is the main legacy of British colonization of the island.
Indeed, Barbados was one of the first British conquests to have a fortified port. This strategic position placed it at the heart of the region's flourishing trade. Careenage, with its docks and warehouses, was the epicenter.
The colonial heritage is also omnipresent, with, for example, the all-British architecture of the Barbados Parliament and St. Michael's Cathedral.
