This white obelisk stands in front of the town's public services esplanade. It commemorates the landing of the first British on Barbados, led by Commander John Powell in 1625 (although the plaque erroneously states 1605). Powell took possession of the island in the name of King James I Stuart, erecting a cross and engraving on a tree: James, K of E and this island. This possession lasted until 1966 and independence. This is the starting point for the Holetown Festival, celebrating the founding of the country's oldest town.
