NATIONAL GATEY NECROPOLIS
A national necropolis at Saint-Nicolas-des-Bois, paying tribute to the soldiers who died for the liberation of the Orne département.
This memorial recalls that during the liberation of the Orne department by the 2nd D.B. in August 1944, 66 soldiers lost their lives. At the end of the fighting, 5 soldiers were buried at the location called Les Gateys. After the war, the 2nd D.B. Association acquired the land to transform it into a small private military cemetery welcoming twenty soldiers from Spain, Africa, Central Europe, or who had escaped from the mainland. Later, the state became the owner and expanded it to accommodate exhumed bodies from military graves in the department. This national necropolis was inaugurated in 1989.
