DE WAAG
A place of classical style designed by the architect of the city hall in Maastricht and the Mauritshuis in Leiden
De Waag is located at the confluence of the Oude Rijn, Nieuwe Rijn and Mare rivers. As Leiden didn't have a large square, it was logical that the weights house should be located along the water to weigh goods entering the city and collect taxes. In the 15th century, this was a medieval wooden building. It was replaced in 1657 by this building in the classicist style, designed by Dutch architect Pieter Post, creator of Maastricht's town hall and the Mauritshuis. Since 2015, it has been a café and restaurant.
