QUARTIER SAINT PIERRE
Historic site with 11th-century motte castrale and remains of a 15th-century church
Place Saint-Pierre is full of historical facts. A motte castrale (an artificial mound where an observation post was erected) was built in the 11th century. Still visible today, it is a reminder of the Viking presence. It is also the birthplace of Osmond de Sées, chancellor to William the Conqueror and Bishop of Salisbury. Three centuries later, during the Hundred Years' War, a fortified castle and the church of Saint-Pierre-du-Château were built, of which the bell tower and arcades remain. Excavations have also uncovered a Merovingian site.
