ROYAL TAKEOVER
Royal prison with former gaols and a chapel separated by bars dating from the and centuries.
Tinchebray's former royal prison dates back to the 17th and 18th centuries. It features former gaols and a chapel separated by bars, where inmates could attend mass. Above, in its original state, is the courtroom, still used for Prud'hommes hearings some twenty years ago, and the "cohue" where villagers awaited judgments. Numerous graffiti left by prisoners can still be seen on the walls and doors. The complex can be visited in fine weather, or by reservation in low season.
