ALIANÇA UNDERGROUND MUSEUM
Museum with an underground labyrinth with cellar galleries, a collection of minerals and the brandy cellar with barrels.
It is an incredible place, a folly that only a billionaire can afford. In 2007, José Berardo, a compulsive art collector and lover of fine wines, acquired the Aliança vineyards and cellars. In the underground labyrinth of the cellar galleries, he assembled a collection of minerals unique in the world. There is the world's largest collection of fossilized fish (350 million years old), countless natural crystals and fossil woods of all sizes, as well as a collection of stone masks from Zimbabwe, enamels, ceramics, a gallery of African art, splendid archaeological artifacts, ancient azulejos... All this, beautifully presented, with a very sophisticated play of lights, all along hundreds of meters of galleries, where it would be easy to get lost. Different rooms, each more magnificent than the other, punctuate the route, whose highlight is the impressive cellar of brandies, an underground cathedral of more than 12 m of vault and 60 m long where, in barrels stacked as far as the eye can see, age in the dark and cool more than a million liters of the best brandies of Portugal. The visit must be accompanied. In addition to the risk of getting lost, the temptation to take away some of the magnificent objects presented was apparently too strong for the first isolated visitors. At the exit, you can taste some of the local products.
