MATANUSKA GLACIER
Matanuska Glacier, 42 km wide and 6.5 km thick with beautiful views, with 3 agencies offering treks
Visible from the Glenn Highway, the Matanuska Glacier is striking on the route between Palmer and Glennallen. At 42 km wide and 6.5 km thick, it is one of the largest glaciers in Alaska and easily accessible. The Matanuska Glacier State Recreation Area does not offer direct access, but has beautiful views and several short trails that run parallel to the glacier and the Matanuska River. On the other hand, the Matanuska Glacier Park, a private domain with a fee, allows to reach the foot of the glacier by car. Three agencies offer treks.
