HAMMERSHUS FORTRESS (HAMMERSHUS SLOTSRUIN)
fortified castle set in a superb site with wild nature, rocky outcrops and panoramic views...
At the northern tip of the island, after following a very jagged coastline with a few pebble beaches, the red ruins of a 12th century castle rise from the top of a hill. Altered over time, it retains its original imposing foundations. Historical panels, installed at the place of the old rooms, tell its history. The site is superb: wild nature, rocks, panorama... You will love to walk around, to picnic or just to admire the marvelous and unlimited view, 72 meters above the sea. The light is incredible at the end of the day.
At the bottom of the path leading to the castle, the Slotsgarden cafeteria is open from 10 am to 7 pm, every day in summer. You can see an exhibition that reconstructs, with the help of models, the life of the castle: its architecture, its inhabitants ... (open from April to October from 10am to 5pm).
Not far from Hammershus Castle, several discreet but pleasant sites are worth a visit:
- beautiful lakes next to Sandvig; the Hammeren Fyr lighthouse which symbolizes the northern tip of the island of Bornholm and directs ships (if you continue the road along the lakes on the right coming from Sandvig).
- Finally, from Sandvig in the direction of Hammershus, a small road will lead you to the stone quarry (Moseløkken) with an artificial lake in its middle. A small museum on the history of the granite quarry completes the discovery of the site (Moseløkkevej 4, Allinge).
