OLUF HØST MUSEUM (OLUF HØST MUSEET)
Small museum located in Gudhjem with rooms devoted to Oluf Høst's artistic career and temporary exhibitions.
Oluf Høst (1884-1966) was a local artist. Landscapes, shores and people of the island are at the center of his work. The museum opened in 1998 and occupies the house in which he lived. Other paintings are also exhibited in the small herring smokehouse in the harbor of Nørresand, very close to the museum. The café on the terrace is also very pleasant. The museum is very small with a beautiful rock garden that gently follows the relief of the Gudjem "mountain". It is organized on two levels.
Three or four rooms are dedicated to the artist's artistic career and to temporary exhibitions. You will quickly find your way around. On the first floor, you will find a biography of the painter, his winter studio with some brushes and books as well as a small room with a film about him in Danish. His style is truly remarkable: he had a very personal way of sketching silhouettes and blending them into airy, almost abstract layers of color. Oluf was married to Hedvig Høst (born Wiedemann) and what is less known is that she was also a painter in her youth. She participated in the 1910 Autumn Salon. She gave up her career shortly after her marriage.
An exhibition, in the recently renovated former summer studio, presents a dozen of her paintings. Complete your visit with a walk on the Bokul rock formation and towards Lake Gråmyr, or along the coast at Salene Bay. Here you will find the motifs that inspired Oluf Høst.
