GISAKURA TEA PLANTATIONS
Certainly one of the most beautiful experiences to make in Rwanda for tea lovers. The visitor will learn the whole timed procedure of tea making, from the picking of the leaves to the packaging before shipment to the trading centres. Avoid Sundays, a day off, to see the pickers at work. The hilly landscapes, with their many shades of green against a blue sky, are simply unique. The workers harvest the tender tea leaves and fill large wicker baskets that they carry on their backs. They are open to tourists, and although every hour spent in the fields is precious in their working day, they can take the time for a chat and a few photos. The transformation process is no less interesting (you learn the difference between black tea and green tea, which both come from the same plant), not to mention the essential step of tasting! Other tea plantations in Rwanda can of course be visited, but those of Gisakura, Nyungwe and Gisovu remain the main and certainly the most beautiful. An excellent visit, very instructive, to be done with the family. The coffee plantations are not to be outdone and this is also the region where you can visit production cooperatives and washing stations, especially around Gisenyi. In both cases, it is better not to arrive unexpectedly, the visit is organized beforehand with the RDB.
