Like many churches in Ethiopia, this church bears the name "Mount Sinai". Built in 1608 by Emperor Susenyo when Gorgora was the capital, it features rich paintings from an original monastery built in the 14th century, in a good state of preservation. The site is particularly beautiful, on an outcrop of land on the shores of Lake Tana. Local belief attributes healing powers to the painting of Saint Mary the Egyptian, which is different from the others.
