AALST BÉGUINAGE
Former beguinage which sheltered more than 200 beguines in the middle of the 16th century, destroyed for a criticized real estate project
Very little remains of the former beguinage founded in 1261 outside the town: the remains of St. Catherine's church, the neo-Renaissance "grand'maison" dating from 1787, two small houses and a 19th-century neo-Gothic chapel dedicated to St. Anthony of Padua and built over the tomb of the mystic beguine Jeanne Dedemaecker, who was said to have performed miraculous cures. Although it housed over 200 beguines in the mid-16th century, it was unfortunately destroyed in 1952 for a criticized real estate project.
