MAIN SQUARE (GROTE MARKT)
Octagonal belfry of late Gothic style housing an old mechanical carillon of the country and a neoclassical town hall.
The Grote Markt is home to the Schepenhuis, the house of the aldermen dating from 1225 (the oldest in the old Netherlands); the octagonal belfry of 1460, built in a splendid late Gothic style and housing one of the oldest mechanical chimes in the country (unfortunately, the belfry is only accessible during temporary exhibitions) and the neoclassical town hall with its magnificent inner courtyard, due to the architect Louis Roelandt, who also designed the Ghent Palace of Justice and Opera House.
