Large beguinage with a unique soothing tranquility for many inhabitants of Ghent.

The Groot Begijnhof Sint-Elisabeth in Flemish is the most recent of the city's three beguinages, and also the largest. Eighty houses, fourteen convents, a motherhouse, an infirmary, a chapel and a church - a city within a city - have been built here. No beguine has lived here for a long time. The soothing tranquility of the place is unique. A precious secret corner that many of Ghent's inhabitants know about and would actually prefer to keep to themselves. We can understand why.

A moment of tranquility, nature and simple beauty after agitation on canals and docks. Great simplicity next to the riches of Flemish art.
