CITY HALL (STADHUIS)
City Hall in Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque styles where the Pacification of Ghent was signed in 1576.
The town hall is a cramped giant in the Hoogpoort. A beautiful ensemble of Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque facades bear witness to the various stages of its construction, which began in 1518. It was here that the Pacification of Ghent was signed in 1576, an act that was to guarantee peace between Catholic and Calvinist factions, as well as between supporters of the Spanish crown and supporters of independence. If it had been followed, the face of Northern Europe would have been changed.
