GEERAARD-DE-DUIVELSTEEN
Castle with a sinister look, sold to the city of Ghent, housing state archives.
Despite its sinister appearance, the Devil never set foot here! Gérard le Diable castle, built between 1216 and 1245, owes its name to its architect, the knight Gheeraert Vilain, nicknamed for his dark skin. In the Middle Ages, the building, with the River Scheldt flowing beneath its pointed windows, marked the border between the Kingdom of France and the Holy Roman Empire. It was sold back to the city of Ghent around 1330, and was in turn an arsenal, a cloister, an orphanage, an asylum... Until 2015, it housed the State Archives.
