RABOT
Old fortified lock on the canal La Lieve with an alley planted with large trees.
500 metres northwest of the Patershol, it can be seen from the northern end of Begijnhoflaan. With its two pointed towers framing a toothed gable, this former fortified lock dates from 1491. It is located on the inner canal (La Lieve) and is the last relic of the old city walls. Opening the lock would have flooded more than 13 km² of land. But the Begijnhoflaan is now a path planted with tall trees, drawing the boundary of the former beguinage. An admirable construction not to be missed.
