CITY MUSEUM - (STADSMUSEUM GENT - STAM)
Museum displaying temporary exhibitions in an interactive and dynamic way in a relaxed atmosphere.
This museum retraces the history of Ghent in an interactive and dynamic way, combining the historic city with its modern extensions, like a shell. This large complex is made up of a 14th-century abbey, a 17th-century monastery and the new 21st-century building. As soon as you enter, you're plunged into the city's past, with the help of interactive maps and 3D models. Then the story unfolds in chronological order, from the city's golden age in the Middle Ages to the present day. The rooms are punctuated by a series of photos by Michiel Hendryckx, entitled "Current views of Ghent". Presented as a center for heritage preservation, it also acts as a springboard to other cultural elements of Ghent. The temporary exhibitions offer a variety of illustrations of the concept of "urban life", so it's well worth a visit before (or after) exploring the city to understand the secrets of its history and evolution. Don't hesitate to bring your children along, as a special children's trail runs through all the museum's rooms, covering the main themes in a playful, childlike way. You'll also appreciate the relaxed atmosphere, green spaces and pleasant cafeteria. Also within the museum, a concert hall with incredible acoustics has been set up in the former infirmary of the 13th-century Mariahospitaal, with its magnificent arched roof.
