BEGUINAGE
Small beguinage with a sumptuous baroque portal in Oudenaarde with about 40 houses and 2 chapels
The place is truly picturesque! This small beguinage, occupied since the 15th century, comprises some forty small houses and two chapels. Look out for the sumptuous Baroque portal, painted red and surmounted by a statuette of Saint Roch, patron saint of the plague-stricken. It leads to a beautiful main chapel. A few small whitewashed 17th-century houses have been preserved, but most were rebuilt in the 19th and 20th centuries. Since the 1960s, it has been a hospice for elderly ladies, returning to its original use.
