BEGUINAGE
One of the best preserved beguinages in the country, with the last monumental baroque door, with typical Demer brownstone
It is one of the best preserved in the country. Founded in 1253 by the Lord of Diest, it houses behind its monumental 17th-century Baroque gateway the 14th-century Church of St. Catherine, in typical Demer brown sandstone. The white houses (topped with religious statues) date from the 17th century and were home to 300 beguines. They left the beguinage in 1928. The infirmary and convent house the cultural center, while the houses are home to artists' studios and social housing. On the1st Sunday in September, the beguinage is lit up by thousands of candles.
