BEGUINAGE
A unique beguinage in the whole of the Westhoek in Diksmuide, accommodating mentally handicapped people, with a courtyard.
The original beguinage dates from the 13th century and is the only beguinage in the whole of the Westhoek. Destroyed during the First World War, it was later rebuilt, but the last beguines never returned. The social role of the beguinage was nevertheless preserved: it was used as a rest home and nowadays it welcomes mentally handicapped people. One can admire the usual white houses preceded by a courtyard and a wall. At the end of the central lawn, the small Romanesque church calls for serenity.
