German military cemetery with statues of Peter Kollwitz, a young volunteer.
25,645 German soldiers are buried in this military cemetery. Among these soldiers is Peter Kollwitz, a young volunteer conscript who fell at the age of 17 in October 1914. His mother, German artist Käthe Kollwitz, was so distraught by her son's death that she created two statues depicting her and her husband mourning their beloved son. This work, entitled Parents en deuil (Mourning Parents), has over the years become a symbol of popular suffering in the face of war.
