MEMORIAL MUSEUM PASSCHENDAELE 1917
Memorial Museum Passchendaele with a collection of historical objects, documents of the First World War...
A must-see rendezvous with history, for everyone. Zonnebeke Castle, some ten kilometers from Ypres, is home to the Memorial Museum Passchendaele 1917. The museum commemorates the battle of Passchendaele 1917, in which 500,000 British, Commonwealth and German soldiers were killed in 100 days, and only 8 km2 of ground was gained. On the1st floor, the tour takes visitors to the heart of the events of the First World War, through a rich collection of historical objects, scene reconstructions, and photographic and cinematographic documents. Then relive the underground life of the British: you'll discover a communications and emergency station, a pump room, headquarters and dormitories. To mark the centenary of the First World War, the museum has added three new sections. A new building focusing on the Battle of Passchendaele emphasizes the war landscape, artillery, air warfare and engineering; a series of permanent exhibits on the different nations involved in the 1917 battle is also in place. A network of German and British trenches has also been rebuilt. To complete the tour, an area dedicated to commemoration draws attention to the duty of remembrance. This museum is the ideal starting point for a tour of the 1917 battlefields. Less than 3 km away are the famous Polygon Wood and Tyne Cot Cemetery.
