MEMORIAL MUSEUM PASSCHENDAELE 1917
Memorial Museum Passchendaele with a collection of historical objects, documents of the First World War...
A historical must-see: 10 km from Ypres, Zonnebeke Castle is home to the Memorial Museum Passchendaele 1917. It commemorates the battle of Passchendaele in 1917, which cost 500,000 British, Commonwealth and German soldiers their lives in 100 days, for a gain of just 8 km2. As the building is currently being renovated, the configuration may be different. On the1st floor, the visit takes you to the heart of the events of the Great War, through a rich collection of historical objects, scene reconstructions, photographic and cinematographic documents. Then relive the underground life of the British: you'll discover a communications and emergency station, a pump room, headquarters and dormitories. To mark the centenary of the First World War, the museum has added three new sections. A building focusing on the Battle of Passchendaele emphasizes the war landscape, artillery, air warfare and engineering, as well as a series of permanent exhibits on the different nations involved in the 1917 battle. A network of German and British trenches has also been reconstructed. To complete the tour, an area dedicated to commemoration draws attention to the duty of remembrance. This museum is the ideal starting point for a tour of the 1917 battlefields. Less than 3 km away are the famous Polygon Wood and Tyne Cot Cemetery.
