LANGEMARK - POELKAPELLE
The impressive German military cemetery has many graves, half of which are in a mass grave, located in Ypres.
Here, too, war has raged here in all its violence. The impressive German military cemetery has more than 44,000 graves, half of them in a mass grave. Some 3,000 young German volunteer soldiers fell here during the First Battle of Ypres in 1914. Four bronze statues of soldiers by sculptor Emil Krieger can also be seen here. The monument to Georges Guynemer, the French aviator who won a string of victories during the Great War before being shot down in Poelkapelle in 1917, is the scene of an annual remembrance ceremony.
