MENIN DOOR
Engraved door, a model of the battlefield at Ypres, benefiting from an archway in the form of a small triumphal arch
A model of the battlefield is engraved on the door. The archway, shaped like a small triumphal arch, is covered with the names of the British soldiers who died in the butchery of the Ypres Salient, one of the bloodiest of the First World War. We are moved to read the 54,896 names of those who came from all over the Empire to fight. Wooden crosses decorated with flowers are regularly placed in memory of the fallen. Every evening at 8pm, two of the town's firemen play the Last Post on the bugle. A vibrant work by architect Sir Reginald Blomfield.
