The "In Flanders Fields" Museum presents the historical story of the First World War. The scenography focuses on the human experience. In this context, the museum tour also includes a visit to the belfry, from the top of which you can admire the city and the surrounding battlefields. Hundreds of authentic objects and images are presented in an innovative, life-like manner. Real people and interactive presentations bring the contemporary visitor face to face with people who experienced war a century ago. In this way, the museum adopts many points of view: the general and military-historical aspect is important, but also the relationship with the present, the past, as a human being and with society, in all the countries concerned.

Pieper and Yperman - Witnesses to war
Temporary exhibition - January 28 2025 - June 01 2025
Hans Pieper was working as an engineer-architect for the city of Cologne, Germany, when war broke out. He was sent to the Belgian coast as an officer in the Festungsbaukompagnie/Köln. From 1915, he was assigned as a lieutenant to the Marine Pionier Bataljon of Marine-Korps Flandern. His duties included building coastal batteries and bunkers. His post took him to many places, which he recorded on paper. Pieper painted and sketched landscapes and ruined buildings with great attention to detail.
Bruges glass artist Jules Yperman, drafted at the age of 20 into the 11ᵉ line regiment of the Belgian army, found himself on the Yser front. He recorded his experiences in a diary and illustrated them with small sketches, pen-and-ink drawings and watercolors. This illustrated diary was later supplemented by individual stories, songbooks and an album filled with watercolors.
Both remained in the coastal region of West Flanders for almost the entire duration of the war. Their works offer a unique perspective on how they experienced the war and their surroundings
Displaced persons - Belgian refugees from the First World War
Temporary exhibition - October 02 2025 - June 14 2026
In 1914, 1.5 million Belgians - a quarter of the population at the time - fled the violence of war. An estimated 600,000 of them spent the entire war abroad, mainly in France, Great Britain and the Netherlands. In addition, thousands of others were forcibly displaced: they were evacuated by the military on both sides of the front, as their place of residence had become too dangerous due to the evolution of the conflict. Many thus became "refugees in their own country". At the end of the war, a difficult return awaited them, sometimes delayed for years. Some never returned, seeing no future in their homeland.
Twenty years after the "Fleeing the Great War" exhibition (2004), the museum will once again devote an exhibition to this largely unknown theme of Belgian refugees from 1914-1918. Over the past two decades, countless personal accounts have been shared with the museum, the collection has been enriched with objects and items documenting this exodus, and new research has been carried out. In Flanders Fields wishes to present these testimonies in a new high-profile exhibition, both inside and outside the walls of the Halles aux draps, focusing on the personal stories and how subsequent generations have dealt with them.

There is a showcase that holds piles of bullet heads, casings and even belt buckles that were recovered from just one field that you realise the enormity of it all.
See for yourself, I could not even take a photo of any displays. To me it would be a mockery.
