DUNE THE HOGE BLEKKER
The Hoge Blekker dune, the highest dune on the entire coastline, located on the site of the Ten Duinen abbey, with massive plantations
At 33 meters, the Hoge Blekker dune (21.25 hectares) is the highest on the entire coastline. From the open sea, sailors could see its summit shining, hence the name " blekken ", meaning "to shine" in Flemish. Since the 16th century, the dune has moved one kilometer to the east. By 1700, it was right on the site of Ten Duinen Abbey. In the 19th century, massive plantations of oyats began to halt its progress. Together with the Schipgat and Doornpanne dunes, the Hoge Blekker forms a 240-hectare chain of dunes!
