INTERACTIVE BEGUINAGE MUSEUM
Interactive museum of the Beguinage of an idyllic appearance and filled with serenity, with history during a dynamic journey
Make no mistake: despite its idyllic, serene appearance, the beguinage was once inhabited by strong, independent, emancipated women who had no need of men or cloisters. Far from the image of little bigots that is sometimes attributed to them, they were feminists before their time, who, independent of church and state, had adopted a democratic organization and would not let themselves be diverted from the path they had traced for themselves. Without fear or reproach. What's more, the radical conception of their religion that they resolutely applied clashed with many of their contemporaries. Unsurprisingly, many theologians even saw them as ungodly women.
In this brand-new, well-appointed interactive center, you'll travel through several centuries of history on a surprisingly dynamic and interactive journey. From its construction to the turbulent years when the beguinage was destroyed several times, three ladies of character, all Grandes Demoiselles, will take you with them and shed light on this little-known community of the time. You'll discover their daily lives, see the beguinage evolve and admire its treasures. Don't forget to take the audioguide for valuable information. We bet these glorious women saints will surprise you despite their respectable age?
